Click your Camera with C
Emily Atherton

Rationale: This lesson will help children identify /k/, the phoneme represented by C. Students will learn to recognize /k/ in spoken words by learning a sound analogy (clicking a camera) and the letter symbol C, practice finding /k/ in words, and apply phoneme awareness with /k/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters.

Procedures:
-
Say “Our written language in a secret code.” It can be tricky at times because we may not know what letters stand for. Today we are going to work on spotting the mouth move /k/. We spell /k/ with the letter C. C looks like your holding a camera, and /k/ sounds like capturing/clicking the picture.
-
Let’s pretend we are clicking our camera so we can find the c. /k/ /k/ /k/ /k/. Notice where your lips are (open). When we say /k/ we blow air between our teeth, and our lips do not touch!
-
Let me show you how to find /k/ in the word cloud. I am going to stretch cloud out in super slow motion and listen for the clicking camera sound! Ccc-l-l-l-ou-d. I could feel my mouth make the clicking sound at the beginning of the word!
-
Let’s try the tongue tickler that is on this poster. Cameron went outside to look for a cool cloud to take a picture of! Here’s our tickler: “Cameron clicked his camera to capture a cool cloud.” Let’s say it together. Now stretch the /k/ at the beginning of every word that starts with a C. “ccccameron ccclicked his cccamera to cccapture a cccool cccloud.” This time we are going to break it off in the beginning of the word. “/c/ameron /c/licked his /c/amera to /c/apture a /c/ool /c/loud.”
-
Pass our primary paper and pencil to students. Say, “We use C to spell /k/ Let’s start with writing a lowercase c first. Start to make a hook with the top touching the rooftop. Curve it all the way down and make another hook at the sidewalk. After demonstrating I will say, “I want to see everybody’s c’s once they have written 5 more!” I will then come around and draw a smiley face on your paper when you are done!
-
I am going to say two words to you and I want you to tell me which one you hear /k/ in. Do you here /k/ in cat or let? Sound or cloud? Cloth or sock? Now let’s see if you can make the /k/ motion. Act like you are holding a camera to take a picture if the words I say start with a C: the, car, was, clean, for, her, cousin.
-
We are going to read our /k/ book Pete the Cat. Book talk: Pete the Cat makes one giant, tasty sandwich for lunch. But what's the fun in eating lunch without your friends? We will have to read to find out what he eats and if he has any friends to eat it with! We will read the book and click our camera when we hear the /k/ sound. Then they create their own cat with a silly /k/ name. They will present their drawings and invented spellings after and display their art work
-
Show CAMERA and demonstrate how to decide if its samera or camera: The C tells me to click the camera when we take a picture; /k/, /k/. So this word is ccc-amera, camera. Now I want you to try some. CAT; cat or sat? CRAWL; bawl or crawl? CLICK; click or kick? CAMEL; flannel or camel?
-
To keep students practicing /k/= c, I will pass out the worksheet and they will say the name of the object/animals and color the pictures that have a /k/. After they color and identify the words, they will practice tracing both the capital and lowercase letter C. For the assessment, I will call each student up individually to go over step #8.
